About Mech Challenge
The main objective of Mech Challenge is to allow participants the chance to explore their interest in the study of mechanical engineering as well as to get to know more about the study of engineering in general. Mech Challenge also aims to provide a fun-filled learning experience for all its participants.
Event Highlights:
Laboratory Visits will be conducted to Labs like Robotics Labs and aerospace Labs with lab technicians explaining the types of equipment used, various experiments and its relevance to the study of mechanical engineering.
Lecture on basic aerodynamics and simple theories to be applied on glider-building competition.
Sharing session with seniors on coursework and career prospects in mechanical engineering.
Participants will be engaged in a fun-filled glider-building activity and be tested on the distance traveled and accuracy of flight. Further details and rules on this competition will be given to participants after registration.
Attractive prizes to be won for glider-building competiton:
1st prize: More than $150 worth of vouchers
2nd prize: More than $100 worth of vouchers
3rd prize: More than $50 worth of vouchers
Top 3 placing will each stand to win a trophy. Participants will compete in teams of 3. Students who register individually will be team together in groups of 3 or as deem fit by the organizers.
Details of registration
Students can register in teams of 3 per team or as an individual.
There is an application fee of $30 for each team or $10 per participant.
If students are not above 21 years of age, they will need to inform their parent/guardian of participating in this event and had the consent form filled and signed.
Students who participant in this event will each stand to receive a goodie bag and there will be prizes and medals for the top 3 finish for glider-building competition.
Students can register through the teacher-in-charge assigned or e-mail us at ntuasme@yahoo.com.sg
The registration form can be obtained from the teacher-in-charge or students can download it at here.
The deadline of registration is 21th February, 2009.
Students are advised to submit their registration forms and application fees as soon as possible due to limited places.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Who can join Mech Challenge?
Mech Challenge is open to all students from local junior colleges, polytechnics and both local and foreign NTU engineering freshmen.
Q: Do I submit my registration form and application fee on the day itself?
Students should submit their registration forms and application fees as soon as possible to book your place and commit your attendance. Priority is given to students who had submitted both the form and the fee and as there are limited places, students who have yet to submit their application fees will not be able to take part in Mech Challenge should there be full booking.
Q: I cannot find anyone to form a team of 3 to join Mech Challenge. Can I come alone?
Yes. Students can register as an individual and pay a application fee of $10. You do not have to fill in your team name if you are registering alone.
Q: What is the purpose of having a glider-building competition?
Mechanical engineering like all engineering requires a lot of practical problem-solving skills and application of theoretical knowledge into real-life situations. The flying of a glider, like the sailing of a boat or driving a car, consists of many areas of sciences in the field of mechanical engineering. By building and flying gliders, we hope to let participants have a hands-on experience, enjoy solving problems and making things work. We hope participants will have a better understanding of mechanical engineering and value the spirit of learning above competition.
Q: Will it be unfair for students from junior colleges to compete with polytechnic students and NTU engineering freshmen as they may have more engineering knowledge?
Each team will have the same amount of materials to build the glider and the ability to improve the performance of the glider will be very limited even with advanced knowledge. To build a truly high-performance glider will actually need much more time, materials, testing and knowledge. Basic knowledge of aerodynamics will be taught by our professor on the day of event and careful planning and fast execution are actually more important, together with a bit of luck, one may still be able to build a decent glider that may win our top prizes. Besides, in-depth knowledge of aerodynamics is taught only at high-level aerospace engineering and each team will have a helper to guide them in building the glider.
Q: Do we need to buy our own lunch?
Lunch and dinner will be provided although participants need to state their food preferences in the registration form.
Q: What do we need to be dressed in?
Students in junior colleges are advised to come in their school uniform. Other participants can come in casual and tidy attire.
Q: What do I bring during that day?
Just bring your student identification card and some money for transport. bring your registration form and application fee if you have not yet submit. It is advisable not to bring large amount of cash and valuables as the organizers of Mech Challenge will not be responsible for possessions lost.
Q: What can we expect of Mech Challenge?
Just come with an open mind and get to know more about mechanical engineering, we believe you will have fun, make friends and definitely have a enjoyable learning experience!
The conditions and content of the Mech Challenge may not be final. The organizers of Mech Challenge has the right to change any part of Mech Challenge at anytime.
