Event: ASME Industrial Visit 3

Venue: Shell Pulau Bukom Refinery

Date: 6th May 2008

The industrial visit to Singapore Shell was held on Tuesday, 6th May 2008. The industrial visit to Shell was a huge success with overwhelming response; however we could only cater for the first 38 students who registered with us. These participants came from various schools, and were mainly students from the senior years. There were a total of 40 participants including 2 representatives from ASME- NTU. We traveled via ferry to Pulau Bukom.

Upon arrival, the participants were briefed about the safety measures by the security guards. All participants were asked to switch off their hand phones and cameras. After the short briefing, our host, a technologist, gave a brief introduction on Singapore Shell. Specifically, he provided answers to questions such as: What does Singapore Shell do? Where are the products exported to? What is the market share of Shell in oil and gas industry? There was a Q&A session following this introduction. Participants were curious and asked many questions on the working environment and benefits at Singapore Shell. Our gracious host openly shared his experiences at Singapore Shell with all participants. From the valuable insights and information provided by him, the participants could better appreciate the benefits and career prospects at Singapore Shell.

After the Q&A session, we had a tour around Pulau Bukom. Due to safety issues, participants were not allowed to walk freely around Pulau Bukom. Singapore Shell specially prepared a bus, and we were on the bus throughout much of the tour. Explanations on the operations of different sections of Pulau Bukom were given by engineers who accompanied us. In addition, we were brought to the instrument control room (ICR) to see the engineers at work and to gain some insights on the function of ICR.

The tour ended with a group photo followed by the journey back to NTU at 4:30pm. This industrial visit was a fruitful and enriching experience to all the participants The visit was not only useful for the participants who will be going for their industrial attachments, but it was also a great educational experience that allowed us a peek into the workings of the oil and gas industry.
