Event: ASME Industrial Visit
Venue: Singapore Technologies Marine
Date: 27th February, 2008
The industrial visit to Singapore Technologies Marine was held on Wednesday, 27th February 2008 which was during the recess week. The visit attracted 30 participants, consisting mainly of third and final year students. These students came from various courses such as maritime studies, EEE and even one student each from bioengineering and chemical engineering.

The visit started off at 1:00pm in the afternoon with the chartered bus leaving Nanyang Technological University and arriving at ST Marine about half an hour later. Upon arrival, the participants were briefed about the safety measures by security personnel. Participants who had camera phones with them were also required to temporarily surrender them at the guard house.
The participants were then given a slide presentation by the VP of Benoi yard, Mr Lim Nian Hua. The slide presentation was mainly a brief introduction about the departments, sales and other pertinent information about ST Marine. Immediately after that, the students were brought for a tour around the Benoi yard by the assistant works manager, Mr. Delvin Gho Seng Wee, with some workers and engineers escorting us along the way. Among the many sections in the yard that were visited were the workshops processing hulls of ships, the piping process and the electrical wiring in ships.
The exciting part of the tour came when the students requested Mr Delvin to bring them up onto a ship. The participants were obligingly led into a cargo ship which was still under construction. The students visited the control room, the engine room and several other parts of the ship. After the tiring and knowledgeable tour, the students were rewarded with some refreshments and a Q&A session with the engineers.
The 3 hour long visit came to an end with a last group photo taken by the participants with the engineers before proceeding back to NTU at 4:00pm.
