On the 20th of February 2009, our society organized an industrial visit to Keppel Shipyard. The visit comprises of 30 participants which are students from Nanyang Technological University ranging from year 1 to final year students. These participants come from various courses such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical and electronics engineering and so on.
The main objective of this event is to expose students to the working environment as well as to assist the students to build up their network with the employers of Keppel. The two and a half hour visit started when the participants arrived at Keppel at around 2.30pm. Fully prepared for their arrival, the participants were brought to a seminar room whereby the Keppel employees gave a brief introduction about themselves, explaining about the background of the Keppel industries, their goals, work opportunities and as well as internships and scholarships program which are offered.
Immediately after the seminar, the participants were then brought to visit some of the factories and manufacturing sites. The participants were given brief explanations of the process of manufacturing the hull, pipes, and vents just to name a few while at the same time having their numerous questions answered one by one by the employees who were bringing them around.
Following to that, the participants then boarded the bus to have a short tour around the shipyard to have pictures taken and a final look at the place before finally ending the enlightening visit and heading back to the university.
