Oral Presentation: (1/3/2008, Saturday)

Despite being a rainy day on the 1st of March, 10 teams from NUS, NTU and SP trudged into NTU brimming with confidence and donning smartly pressed formal suits.

They are the participating teams of the Singapore National Concrete Canoe Competition (SNCCC) organized by NTU’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Club and that Saturday morning was when they would present their designs of a concrete canoe at LT19A to 5 judges -- Dr Gary Ong Khim Chye (Associate Professor and Deputy Head of NUS), Ms Liang Mui Keow (Lecturer from the School of the Built Environment of SP), Assoc. Professor Tan Teng Hooi (Associate Chair-Civil & Environmental Engineering (Admin) of NTU), Er. Chong Kee Sen (Honorary Secretary of The Institution of Engineers Singapore) and Mr. Willie Kay (1st Vice President of Singapore Concrete Institute).

The opening speech was given by Professor Pan Tso-Chien (Dean - College of Engineering), followed by a second speech by Professor Teh Cee Ing, (Chair - Civil and Environmental Engineering) before the Oral presentation commenced.

Of the 10 teams, Viper from NUS (also the winning team) outshone the rest in terms of their presentation and the way they carried themselves. At the start of the presentation they touched on the hull of the canoes, which judges felt that it was better than simply talking about the materials. However, like all the other teams, Viper had their shortcomings which they will definitely have to improve on.

There were also some teams who acknowledged their weaknesses and improved on it. Team Gemilang (NTU) took the liberty to discuss their canoe models with professors from NTU and eventually changed their material from water to super plasticizer. Team Surf (NTU) had decided to use carbon fibre in their model despite carbon fibre being extremely expensive. Several teams like Team Surf (NTU), Runge Kutta (NTU) and Voyager (NUS) plan to cast the canoe repeatedly with their concrete layer, with Voyager opting to cast it by hand as this would reduce the formation of air bubbles. It would be unimaginable how their hands would turn out after the moulding…

The efforts that the teams put in are truly touching. We wish all 10 teams the best in their race against each other on the 25th of May, Sunday, at Lower Seletar Reservoir. Do join us if you are free on that day!

After obtaining the materials, each team can start by making some models for use during the oral-presentation or likewise.

You are most welcomed to approach any of our committees if you have any inquires.
