Hall 13 Hall Olympiad 11/12 Summary

In Hall Olympiad 11/12 (HO), Hall 13 residents uncovered many of their hidden talents.  Their performance during the competitions, truly awe-inspiring, totally exceeded everyone’s expectations.

We shall start off with Hall Opening by Hall 13 Cheer Team Spectrum, one of the most anticipated events in HO. They did us proud with their flawless stunts, exhilarating routine and poufy skirts. Spectrum eventually clinched the First Runner-Up title, but they will always be Champions in our hearts.

For Sports, Hall 13 out-performed itself in various categories which we didn’t have the expertise (i.e. IVPs, national players) and were considered the underdogs. We overcame our drawbacks by training our enthusiastic newbie players and lots and lots of support from Hall 13 residents.

In fact, our IHG games all seen a sea of orange supporters helping out in in welfare, flag waving, photo-taking and cheering ; Hall 13 is truly family.

Champions: Basketball (F)’s second gold in 2 consecutive years. The girls’ teamwork was impregnable despite playing against a national player; they were like five Jeremy Lins on court and their goals were linsanity, leaving the supporters in awe.

Champions: Hockey (F)’s breaking into the finals was a challenging process, given that Hall 13 actually lost its very first Hockey Female game in merely the preliminaries.  We faced many tough opponents along the way but eventually we defeated the defending champions won comfortably with determination and drive.

In Recreational Games, we have Chinese Chess clinching first-runner up again, due to what Morris (Recreational Sec) adpetly decribed as “bad luck”. It’s clear that the players were totally matched up in their c.chess standards. Nevertheless the team was all smiles after the competition, ready to go for it again next year.

Honorable mention goes to our Weiqi team which, despite having not won a single game last year and some players learning the game for merely a week, got into the quarter finals. Despite the quite and concentrated nature of recreational games, we also have supporters from Hall 13 who specially came down with food and entertainment. These goes a long way in helping our rec players brace through the intense competitions. With that we will try try and try again next year.

Hall Olympiad (HO) 11/12 ended with a bang with the spectacular performance of Hall 13’s dance team Effervescence dancing to tunes ranging from ‘pink fluffy unicorns’ to ‘sexy and you know it’.

Effervescence’s performance theme “we’re sexier than you know it” adeptly highlights the fact that Hall 13 is ‘sexier’ than you know it to the other halls. We stunned many with the amount of support and welfare during competitions. Yet despite being a family hall, our newbie sports and recreational teams broke into quarters and even finals, proving that Hall 13 is the Hall to look out for coming Hall Olympiad 12/13.

Hall 14: We Will Climb Higher

Hall Olympiad Summary

As a normal Hall resident, it would be natural to see Hall 3, 2, 16 and 6 on the top 3 for each sport and games. And our body would instinctively make a loud “oooh” or “wah” when we are pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised that they’re out of the top seed positions. Shakespeare can be said to be a believer of Hall 14: “Having nothing, nothing can we lose.” We have never won a single game thus far, so you can’t consider it a bad year for Hall 14 can you. Some might call Hall 14 a wallflower, just enjoying the ride with the other halls, while some smile when they see our name in their qualifier group.

But we’re no pushovers either. We get louder”OOHS” and “Wahs” when we make it to the top. Like any other Halls that are not Manchester United or Chelsea (Think Hall 3 and Hall 2), we get ready every year to topple the giants.

With 4 semi-finalist teams this year on our own achievement charts, those include our Girls Volleyball team, Rugby, Sepak Takraw and Carrom, it wasn’t say a victorious year for us to rejoice about, but the standard is definitely there. It was a breakthrough for our Sepak Takraw team to be seeded for the first time ever. It was at least a week long of anguish for our Volleyball girls, after losing to Hall 8, for we were marked as the team to beat this year, after our lost to Hall 2 in 2011.

carrom

Enough of the bragging of our meager achievements, Hall 14 ranked 13th in both IHg and IHRG respectively, bagging home a 15th place in the overall HOC rankings.

That’s what learning is, after all; not whether we lose the game, but how we lose and how we’ve changed because of it and what we take away from it that we never had before, to apply to other games. Losing, in a curious way, is winning.

The finishing line

As IHG crosses the finishing line, we all looked back in joy with tears and perspiration after this long marathon. It was not smooth sailing but through the ups and downs, it bonded our Hall to be unified as one. The encouragement, the cheers, the laughter, the pain, the disappointment was shared equally among all residents and players. It shadowed the sadness and amplified the joy in times of good and bad. What was gained in this season’s IHG was more than just glory and experience but the friendships and honor, which was enough for us.

I would also like to thank all the Joint Hall Chairs and Vice- Chairs, our publication in-charge, Nichole and Glenn for being such wonderful working associates. All the best in your future endeavors.

Signing off,

Hall XI Publications Secretary, Ezann Ow

Hall 3 IHG Softball, Female (29 Jan 2012)

IHG Softball, Female (29 Jan 2012)
The softball girls have done Hall 3 proud again with the victory in the game against Hall 9 last Sunday with a score of 15-2.

Our girls started off the attack for the first inning. It was not the opponent pitcher’s luckiest day – she granted our girls numerous walks with her pitches. The defining moment in the match came with the bases loaded with runners from our hall. Our next batter in line made use of the opportunity and with a spectacular hit to out field, she managed to send her teammates home. She displayed commendable base running skills too, confusing the opponent fielders; and with their fumble, she completed the inning with a home run.

With the first half of the inning ending with 7-0, the girls took on the field with a determination to stop all runs. Our pitcher, Eunice gave Hall 9 a hard time with her remarkably accurate pitching. Our fielders defended the field well, preventing any runs from being made. No points were scored by the opponents in the second inning as well.

For the third inning, our team took a change in pitcher. As usual, pitcher Zihui’s injury prevented her from pitching as well as she did for her previous match, nevertheless, she displayed her natural flair in her position, impeding the scoring of most of the batters.

The score for the fourth and final inning was not kept due to the mercy rule. Both teams continued to play a friendly game as practice for both halls.

News of Hall 9 winning in an earlier game against last year’s runner up Hall 12 had left the girls apprehensive. Nevertheless, that did not affect the morale of the team; instead it drove up the spirits of the girls for the game.

The softball girls will play for a place in the semi finals this weekend. Drop by to show your support, because support from everyone counts.

The match was held at the SRC pitch at 0900hrs.

Hall3 – IHG Hockey, Male, Finals (29 Jan 2012)

IHG Hockey, Male (29 Jan 2012)
Sunday mornings are not a time to be associated with the supernatural but our Hall 3 boys entered Delta Sports Complex ready to exorcise the ghost of the IHG 2010/2011 finals.

The boys were eager to put up a better showing than that of the previous year’s, where they ended up second. The long awaited hockey finals had several false starts, with date and venue changes. The uncertainty over when it was to take place however only built up more anticipation and made the hockey team more hungry for gold.

In his pre-match talk, the captain, Haikal (#1) had emphasized to the team “to put in their best effort and the results would follow”. Although sticking to this mantra was difficult with the blazing late morning sun hampering efforts, the boys did not disappoint.

The match started off and our boys put no hesitation in starting the celebrations early. Aggressive attacking play allowed for a screamer by Harry (#13) from the edge of the penalty area, giving Hall 3 the lead in the first minute.

The remainder of the first half saw our opponents put up a strong fight to keep the scoreline down and they fought tooth and nail, as our attack repeatedly stretched their defence. The first half ended 1 – 0 in favour to Hall 3 after 15 minutes.

The second half saw a set of fresh legs take the field, this further tiring our opponents and midfield runs by Haikal and connecting passes to Kai Bin (#10) left the Hall 16 players dizzy. Our advantage of having a full bench of substitutes allowed us to rotate players, ensuring everyone was able gave their all despite the punishing weather. This also allowed a leg up against our opponents, who were observed to have a less than crowded bench.

As the game progressed, our opponent’s resilience wore down and Kai Bin found the net after leading the Hall 16 defence in a deadly tango in their penalty area with his deft dribbling. There was more to follow with the next goal from Haikal, smashing a shot from what seemed like an “impossibru” angle across the penalty area into the top right corner of the goal.

There was brief anxiety as our opponents had found a new lease of life in attack, and won a Penalty Corner. However, our Goalie, Matthew was on task and duly put the ball away. He maintains his clean sheet held throughout the tournament. This feat aided by the hard work of our defensive line, which Matthew cheekily thanked for “not allowing him to touch the ball”.

Hall 3 wrapped up their victory with Harry sneaking in between Hall 16′s defensive lines and putting in a deflection into the right corner of the net. Special mention to him for finding the net not once but twice in this game, much to the delight of his team mates.

With the final whistle blown, confirmation was given that Hall 3 were the new male IHG champions of Hockey and we pray that this dominance would continue, with a win from the Hockey girls this Tuesday.

Much credit has to be given to our boys, with a motley crew of residents with varying skills being assembled. With a majority of players having no background in the sport, a team was moulded out of various training sessions over the span of 5 months. It could be said that this is a textbook example of hard work and resillence with the Assistant Sports Secretary, Hanwei (#101) summing up “This is what Hall 3 does: We come together, we train hard, we win.”

All the best Girls, bring Gold back to 52 Nanyang Walk as well!

The match was held at the Delta Sports Complex Hockey Pitch at 1000hrs.
