Modern judo has its origins in jujitsu,
a fighting art that can be traced back
over a thousand years into Japanese
history.
Judo itself, however, is a relatively
recent synthesis and owes it existence
to the genius of one man Dr. Jigoro Kano.
The early history of judo is inseparable from its founder, Japanese
polymath and educator Jigoro Kano( 1860¨C1938).
The word "judo" shares the same root deogram
as "jujitsu": "ju" , which may mean
"gentleness", "softness",depending on its context.
The soft method it is the principle of using one's
opponent's strength against him and adapting
well to changing circumstances.
The use of "do", meaning way, path has philosophical
overtones.Kano saw judo as a means for governing and improving
oneself physically, mentally, emotionally and morally.
