Sojourn 2001

The NTUSB and Alumni held her 8th annual concert, Sojourn 2001, on 28 January 2001 at the Victoria Concert Hall. We are very proud to have Mr. Lee Yock Suan, Minister for Information and The Arts as our prestigious Guest-of-Honour. Our VIPs include Dr Cham Tao Soon, President for Nanyang Technological University as well as Head of National Institute of Education to name a few.

A few interview gigs with FM 99.5 was arranged in early January in which our music was also recorded & broadcasted.
Sojourn 2001 was especially important, as it serves as the avenue to portray our ability to represent Singapore and the University in the coming 14th World Music Contest (WMC) in July 2001. Therefore, this concert featured many challenging pieces such as “Fantasy Variation”, “A Movement for Rosa”, “A Slavic Farewell” and “Trois Dances”. Of course, there will be our usual contemporary side with pieces like “Variations on a Korean Folk Song”, “Cartoon Carnival” as well as “Elisabeth” from the famous Germany musical.

“Fantasy Variation” is our proposed choice piece for the 14th WMC, which is subjected to the approval of the WMC authorities by early February 2001. “A Movement for Rosa” is the set piece for the 2nd Harmony Division in the event and “A Slavic Farewell” is our warm-up piece. This is why Sojourn 2001 is so important to the members of the NTUSB.

Playing a few jazzy tunes to spice up the memorable concert, the jazz ensemble consisted of Imarah Abas (alto sax), Guo Qian (tenor sax), Angela Chng (trombone), Roland Teo (trumpet), Larry Keh (trumpet), Alex Tan (drum set) and Jocelyn Lau (keyboard).

Clarinet Ensemble at Bukit Panjang Plaza

To bring festive cheer to shoppers at Bukit Panjang Plaza, the NTU Clarinet Ensemble was invited to give a performance in December 2001. Playing a few familiar Christmas tunes and clarinet favourites, the 9-members strong ensemble serenaded the crowd and was very warmly received.
