Mr. Luk Hoi Yui graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1960, after which he took up as the Teacher of Horn in the same institution. He was the Principle French Horn player in the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He also served as a lecturer in Brass before joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra(SSO) as the Sub-Principle Horn player and later the Acting-Principle Horn player.

Mr Luk was appointed the Music director of Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) and achieved many major awards, including the First Prize in the Janitsjarfestivalen Hamar in Norway in 1993 and

the First Prize (Distinction) in the 12th World Music Contest held in Holland in the same year. More recently, he successfully brought the NTUSB to a First Prize in the 13th World Music Contest.

To the band members, Mr Luk was more than just a conductor. Known as "Lao Shi"(Chinese Translation of the "Teacher") to all NTUSB members, he was extremely dedicated and motivating. Under his guidance, the band has been actively involved in the music and cultural scene both within and outside campus, as well as the local and the International music arenas. The musical sojourns in China, Norway, Australia and The Netherlands also helped the NTUSB mature and gain more exposure.

The band is very thankful to Mr. Luk and strives to achieve his vision for the band -- continual improvement in all musicals endeavors and music and cultural exchange between the band and those of different nations even though he is regretfully no longer with the band.
