The final installation in the NTU String Orchestra's 5-part "Journey" series came to a close on the evening of 24th March 2011. It was a memorable and exciting occasion for the orchestra as we performed in the Esplanade Recital Studio for the first time, and tickets were sold out a week in advance. A cello choir of 11 cellos and one double bass performing "Libertango" was one of the highlights of the evening, as was the orchestra's rendition of the quirky and fun "Serenade for Strings" by Wiren.
Journey '11 was also momentous for being the first concert where our new conductor, Gerard Chia, took up the baton for NTUSO. Gerard is a distinguished musician with a masters' degree from the Eastman school of music, and a much sought after teacher and performer. With the concert a rousing success, we look forward to many fruitful years with Gerard at the helm.
An excerpt from the conductor's message reads: "With this evening’s concert, the “Journey” series
comes to a conclusion. We will be starting our next generation of concerts
entitled the “Prism” series. “Prism” will be a string of concerts that will showcase
an even greater number of NTUSO students as soloists, premiere newer and more
recent works, as well as explore works of different genres and ethnicity. We
hope to include in the near future within this series, festival participations and
concert tours abroad."
Congratulations to the NTU String Orchestra!

The Training Orchestra had their second public concert at the Republic Polytechnic Cultural Centre on 28th January 2011, under the baton of Dr Yeo Jan Wea. The intermediate players in the Training Orchestra had been working hard through the holiday month of January, having up to 5 practice sessions in school a week in order to be ready for this concert. As a result, concert was greatly enjoyable for all involved, particularly the entertaining one-bow concerto, in which the whole orchestra used only one bow, passed between the principal violinist, violist, and cellist--and everyone else plucked their strings.
Congratulations to the Training Orchestra and Dr Yeo!
