Review: The Kite Runner

August 11 2007 - Venkateswaran Balakrishnan

The Kite RunnerAfter hearing rave reviews, I had the good fortune of borrowing the acclaimed novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a relatively new writer. Though I had my doubts about the book thinking that it might be just another book which might end up to be a bore, I was totally wrong as I found myself enjoying the book. It narrates the childhood of Amir, a Pashtun who has an unique relationship with Hassan, a Hazara. However, an incident involving Hassan changed the nature of their relationship and it left Amir feeling guilty. Amir will eventually leave Afghanistan for America where he would become successful while Hassan will stay in Afghanistan. Amir would however come back to Afghanistan later for one last shot at redemption.

It also provides glimpses of Afghanistan history from the time of monarchy in the 1970, to the Soviet Occupation in the 1980s, to the Taliban regime in the mid 90s and informs the reader of the tribal politics in Afghanistan. Afghan customs are regularly featured in the book. I couldn’t help but empathise with Afghanistan for the countless wars the country has seen. It’s a story of redemption, love and courage presented in a raw form and “The Kite Runner” is certainly a must-read.
