CurLis into its eighth year of serving the community. Every year, the committee strives to improve and to reach out to a larger pool of beneficiaries and volunteers.
A brief outline of previous events is as follows:
Curl'03, the inaugural project, was a five-km canoeing expedition that involved more than 100 participant, including canoeists from junior colleges, youths-at risk and the learning-impaired.impaired.
Curl'04 was a pedal-kart relay race around Marina City Park. The 400 upper secondary school student volunteers involved befriended 200 less-privileged children from six welfare centres through this activity. They worked together for over a month to create and decorate from scratch the three-wheel peda-karts used. Beneficiaries included the Chilren's Cancer Foundation, Children's Society and Club Society.
CurL '05 was an attempt to break the Guinness World Longest "poh-pia" record and a raft relay marathon competition. It involved the participation of 650 beneficiaries (elders, kids, visually handicapped, hearing impaired, intellectually disabled and physically disabled) from several VWOs such as the Children's Society and Whispering Hearts Family Service Centre. Volunteers from various secondary schools, junior colleges, tertiary institutions and corporate companies also joined in the event that was held at Siloso Beach, Sentosa.
CurL'06 was a kayaking expedition that involved the participation of 150 volunteers as well as beneficiaries from several VWOs such as Special Olympics Singapore and the Singapore Association for the Deaf. The event was made possible with the participation of volunteers from various secondary schools, junior colleges, tertiary institutions and corporate companies.
As one of the events of the month-long National Day celebrations, CurL'07 was part of the inaugural Marina Bay Challenge 2007 jointly organized by Community Chest, WSC, and People's Action Youth Movement. CurL'07 was a dragon boating experience involving 300 participants from various VWOs and schools. Guest-of-Honour President S R Nathan flagged off a series of dragon boat races that was held at the Marina Bay floating platform where beneficiaries and volunteers raced down the Singapore River.
CurL'08 witness the construction of a large mosaic mural which is currently displayed at the HortPark. A total of 100 beneficiaries from various VWOs such as Friends of Disabled Society and MINDS Youth Group participated in the event. In addition, students from various junior colleges and secondary schools also took part in the event.
CurL'09 enable the beneficiaries to express their creativity and challenge their mental limits by decorating and flying kites at Marina Barrage. Regardless of the H1N1 outbreak, the event was made possible with the participation of beneficiaries from MINDs and volunteers from respective tertiary institutions.
