NTU GSA Dance Crew
In January 2018, a small group of NTU graduate students came up with an idea of a multi-cultural group of dance enthusiasts, reflecting the diversity of the cultural background of NTU. The primary objective of the venture was to effectively provide opportunities to graduate students to nourish their recreational skills as well as take a break from the routine work-life to get a fresh view at things around them. Being a part of NTU GSA Dance Crew serves as a stress-buster and graduate students must certainly not miss the opportunities to have some fun and to relax during graduate life at NTU. The project seeks to promote the culture of performing arts, through the creative integration of traditional and modern elements. By creating a multi-cultural crew, the aim is also to promote cultural integration.
NTUGSA Dance Crew is a fun and active group for all the enthusiastic graduate students and graduate alumni of NTU who have the passion and/or interest in any kind of dance form. There is no audition during recruitment, and any graduate student with any level of experience or training in any dance style is welcome to join the crew for free. The team ensures that graduate students experience a campus life full of fun and creativity. Members go through regular training sessions and rehearsals on a weekly basis at Yunnan Corner. The crew also host independent workshops of specific dance styles for the students and staff. The experienced or trained members take the charge and teach the newcomers to a particular style, along with preparing choreography for performances at events. The crew operates as a family who share and learn together.
The Crew started off with five member-crews dedicated to specific dance forms – Chinese Classical; Indian Classical; Hip Hop; Bollywood; Jazz. Each dance style represents a unique cultural aspect and caters to the practice of that. Since members across the member-crews perform together at events, this essentially facilitates cross-cultural bonding and appreciation towards each other. The latest genre of dance incorporated in the crew is Belly Dance.
NTU GSA Dance Crew aims to develop a strong sense of communication through movement among the students of NTU. Besides campus showcases, NTUGSA Dance Crew members also have the opportunity to perform at public events, community functions and music videos. This exposure gives the members valuable experience performing in front of appreciative crowds while having fun doing what they enjoy doing. In April 2019, the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI), Singapore created a music video to celebrate the Merdeka generation of Singapore and the Indian Classical wing of NTU GSA Dance Crew were invited to feature in the same.
