So you have arrived on campus and are excited to start your new life at NTU! But before you throw yourself into your classes, projects and exams, first on the list are to settle into your new home. Here are a few things that will help you to do exactly that:
SIM card: Most important on the list is connectivity! Mobile access! To stay in touch with friends and family back home, as well as to stay connected to new friends on campus. You will need a SIM card then. Pre-paid SIM cards are available on campus from any branch of 7-11. There are 3 mobile phone operators in Singapore. These are M1, SingTel, and Starhub, and all have pre-paid options.
EZ-link card: For International students, this is the first card you’d want to get. It’ll make public transport cheaper and easier. Tap the card on boarding and alighting (exiting), both on the bus and MRT. Purchase one at 7-Eleven, SingPost outlets, Passenger Service Centres at MRT stations (Boonlay and Pioneer) or at Boon Lay Bus Interchange in Jurong Point accessible via 199 and 179 bus route. Prepare some loose change for your first trip out from NTU without the card, the fare is approximately $1.60 on bus 199 from Hall 11 to Boon Lay and on bus 179 from North Spine to Boon Lay.
Daily Necessities: Refer Section “Essential Retail Services” for in-campus supermarkets. Alternatively the nearest mall, Jurong Point is accessible via bus 179/199, you would surely find whatever you need there. Also along the bus 199 route is the Sheng Siong supermarket.
Money Changer: Many options are available at Jurong Point Shopping Mall with reasonable rates.
